Eglise Saint-Sauveur de Saint-Macaire to Saint-Macaire
With its dual role as a priory and parish church, the church of Saint-Macaire has a chevet that refers to a centred building plan, with the fourth apse replaced by a single nave. The system of supports in place in the choir suggests that the building was to have been vaulted with a row of domes: disputes with the suzerain Sainte-Croix abbey in Bordeaux delayed the work and led to the adoption of a Gothic vaulting method. Each of the three apses has a semi-polygonal shape, the edges of which are obliterated on the inside by a set of blind arcatures, justifying the crowns of historiated capitals.
