Church of Sainte-Croix-du-Mont to Sainte-croix-du-mont

The heart of the Bordeaux wine region, Sainte-Croix-du-Mont sits on a rocky outcrop that is home to a fossilised oyster bed. The church proudly dominates the Garonne valley facing the Sauternes region. The parish has existed since the end of the 12th century. The original church dates from this period. At the time, it was a rural Romanesque church with a single nave. Girard de Tastes had the first chapel added. Over the centuries, as the population grew, the church was enlarged. The end of the 19th century saw the demolition of many churches and Romanesque architectural features. All that remains is the now-listed portal and its famous rope pullers.
