Les Jardins du Château de Mongenan to Portets
Languages spoken
At Portets, around 20 km south of Bordeaux, Château de Mongenan is a delightful 17th-century “folie” surrounded by enchanting gardens. At Mongenan, whose first owner, Antoine de Gascq, had Jean-Jacques Rousseau as his mentor, nature is omnipresent. As you stroll through the gardens, you will discover not one, but several.
The garden “pour l’ornement” follows the classic design of a French park. In the “pleasure” garden, stroll in the shade of tall trees with names that are an invitation to travel, such as the Virginia plane tree, the Aussages orange tree, the camphor tree and the arbutus… Finally, take a 7-step landing evoking Paradise and enter the “utility” garden, where baroque meets esotericism, and admire some thousand species of vegetable, aromatic or medicinal plants.
