Village of Uzeste to Uzeste
At Uzeste stands the ancient collegiate church of Notre-Dame, the great work of Pope Clement V. The building is a composite structure: an early Romanesque envelope, a 13th-century nave and a small Gothic portal dedicated to the Virgin Mary (second half of the 13th century). The chevet and choir were built in the 14th century, and the bell tower was erected at the end of the 15th century. The magnificent marble tomb of the Gascon pope was installed in the middle of the choir in the 19th century. The stained glass windows in the three apses of the choir, the work of glass painters Joseph Villiet and Henri Feur, show that the entire life of the pontiff Clement was linked to Uzeste, from his baptism to his burial. Uzeste’s streets are still lined with old, low, street-fronted houses with chamfered mullioned windows from the 15th and 16th centuries. Near the old collegiate church is the 18th-century college house.
