Terra Aventura: More than one trick up your sleeve to Bazas
A long, long time ago, in the 1st century AD, a woman from Bazas set out to travel to Jerusalem… “La Matrone”, as she was known to the locals, witnessed the execution of St John the Baptist, whose head was cut off… legend has it that she then managed to enclose a few drops of his blood, in a silver conch.
A “conch”, old Zacquet… It’s a shell-shaped container! On her return to Bazas, La Matrone had a small oratory built where she placed the relic of John the Baptist, who became the city’s patron saint for the occasion.
